Trump Declares US-China Unity on Iran, Urges Tehran to Reach Deal Quickly

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed growing impatience with Iran, asserting that during discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, both leaders agreed on the necessity for Tehran to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway has been effectively closed to most shipping traffic due to escalating tensions and military actions.

In the wake of these discussions, Trump indicated he might consider lifting sanctions on Chinese oil companies that have been purchasing Iranian oil, sanctions that were imposed by Washington prior to his trip to China. However, his remarks did not clarify whether Beijing would leverage its influence over Tehran to help resolve a conflict that China has stated should never have occurred.

Trump noted the complexities of the situation, stating, “We’ve settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn’t have been able to settle,” following his meeting with Xi, which covered various topics including the Iran conflict, Taiwan, and trade.

China’s foreign ministry, while not commenting directly on the discussions between Xi and Trump, issued a statement expressing frustration over the ongoing war in Iran. The ministry remarked, “This conflict, which should never have happened, has no reason to continue.”

Regional Implications of the Strait Closure

The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of international shipping, with Iran’s actions leading to significant disruptions in global energy supplies. Following U.S.-Israeli military actions that began on February 28, Iran has effectively shut the strait to most vessels, prompting concerns over energy security worldwide.

The United States recently paused its military attacks on Iran but has initiated a blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran has made it clear that it will not reopen the strait until the U.S. ends its blockade. Trump has warned of potential military action against Iran if a deal is not reached.

“We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon; we want the straits open,” Trump stated while seated alongside Xi in Beijing.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that Tehran has received indications from the U.S. regarding a willingness to continue negotiations, although he did not provide further details. Iran, which maintains that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, has resisted calls to halt its nuclear program or to relinquish its stockpile of enriched uranium.

Trump expressed his frustration, stating, “I am not going to be much more patient. They should make a deal,” during an interview on Fox News. He suggested that securing the enriched uranium was primarily for public relations purposes.

Economic Concerns Amidst Ongoing Conflict

The ongoing conflict has had immediate economic repercussions, with oil prices rising approximately 3% to nearly $109 a barrel amid fears of a lack of progress in negotiations. Following the discussions between Trump and Xi, the White House reported that Xi had made it clear that China opposes any Iranian attempts to impose tolls for the use of the strait.

Additionally, Trump mentioned that Xi had assured him that China would not supply military equipment to Iran, calling this a significant statement during his Fox News appearance.

When questioned about U.S. sanctions on Chinese oil refineries purchasing Iranian oil, Trump noted that he would make a decision regarding those sanctions in the coming days.

Political Ramifications for the U.S. Administration

As the conflict continues, it poses a growing liability for Trump, particularly with the U.S. midterm elections approaching in November. The administration’s handling of the situation has drawn scrutiny, and analysts suggest that Xi may be reluctant to pressure Iran too hard or withdraw military support, given Iran’s strategic importance as a counterbalance to U.S. influence in the region.

Trump emphasized that he is not seeking favors from China, stating, “I’m not asking for any favors, because when you ask for favors, you have to do favors in return.” He claimed that the U.S. has effectively diminished Iran’s military capabilities, suggesting that further military action may be necessary.

Negotiations aimed at ending the conflict, mediated by Pakistan, have stalled as both Iran and the U.S. rejected each other’s recent proposals. Araqchi indicated that Iran is open to any Chinese input and is attempting to give diplomacy a chance, despite a lack of trust in the U.S.

Iran is prepared to resume hostilities if necessary, while reiterating that vessels not associated with states attacking Iran should be allowed to navigate the Strait of Hormuz. Prior to the conflict, this waterway was crucial for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, with significant volumes passing through it.

Ongoing Tensions in Lebanon

The situation in the region is further complicated by ongoing tensions in Lebanon, where renewed fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah has resulted in significant casualties. Thousands of Iranians have died due to U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, and the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon is set to expire soon.

Discussions between Lebanese and Israeli officials are ongoing, with the U.S. State Department reporting productive talks. However, Hezbollah opposes these discussions, particularly Israel’s insistence on disarming the group.

Trump’s stated objectives for initiating the conflict include dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, curtailing its ability to threaten neighboring countries, and facilitating regime change in Tehran. Meanwhile, Iran seeks the lifting of sanctions, reparations for war damages, and recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
