The fifth series of Race Across the World recently returned, and this time, it takes viewers and contestants on an exhilarating journey across captivating destinations in Asia. The series proudly features a new cast that embarks on a remarkable 14,000km race, kicking off from the iconic Great Wall of China and culminating at the southern tip of India.

The Start of the Adventure: The Great Wall of China

Stretching over 21,000km, this ancient fortification symbolizes China’s rich history and endurance. Contestants started their journey overlooking the village of Huanghuacheng, a fitting initial spot that captures the essence of exploration.
Checkpoint One: Huangling, China
A Gateway to History
Approximately 2,000km south of the Great Wall, Huangling captures the beauty of Jiangxi Province. Renowned for its unique Hui-style architecture and the vibrant practice of drying chillies on rooftops, Huangling is a picturesque village nestled among lush mountains.
Teams must navigate via cable car across the scenic landscape, leading them to the Huangling Shaiqiu Hotel, where they will rest and prepare for the next leg of their journey.
Checkpoint Two: Sanya, China
From Mountains to Beaches
Next, the contestants travel about 2,700km to Sanya on Hainan Island. Known for its tropical climate, this destination attracts China’s elite and promises participants a mix of urban sophistication and natural beauty. The journey takes them through bustling cities and serene rural areas.
Sanya boasts stunning beaches and cultural landmarks, including the towering Guanyin statue at Nanshan Temple, an impressive sight that encapsulates the blend of spirituality and natural beauty present in this coastal city.
Checkpoint Three: Shangri-La, China
A Touch of Myth
From Sanya, the teams head toward Shangri-La, located on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Known for its rich cultural tapestry and captivating architecture, the city was renamed in 2001 to attract tourists seeking the mythical paradise described in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon.
The journey involves key stops in intriguing cities, allowing racers to witness the harmonious blend of Chinese and Tibetan cultures. Shangri-La is home to the Songzanlin Monastery, an essential stop for those who want to immerse themselves in the spiritual essence of the region.
Checkpoint Four: Varanasi, India
A Spiritual Pilgrimage
As the racers cross into India, they make their way to Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Known for its deep spirituality, Varanasi serves as a critical pilgrimage spot for numerous faiths, including Hinduism and Buddhism.
With its vibrant ghats lining the Ganges River, the city buzzes with life, culture, and tradition. From the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple to the bustling marketplaces, Varanasi embodies the rich tapestry of Indian culture and spirituality.
Checkpoint Five: McLeod Ganj, India
The Heart of Tibetan Culture
Following their time in Varanasi, the contestants travel to McLeod Ganj, a serene hill station known as the home of the 14th Dalai Lama. This town offers insights into Tibetan culture and spirituality, attracting visitors seeking wisdom and blessing.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas, McLeod Ganj boasts picturesque viewpoints and deep cultural roots, illustrated by landmarks such as the Tibet Museum, which showcases the history of Tibet in exile.
The Finale: Kanniyakumari, India
A Fitting Conclusion
The race concludes at Kanniyakumari, the southernmost point of mainland India. Renowned for its breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, this town serves as a melting pot of cultural and natural beauty.
With its vast history, vibrant temples, and the iconic Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanniyakumari is a beautiful location for racers to experience a sense of closure at the end of their epic journey, all while competing for the grand prize of £20,000.
