Two-time Olympic gold medallist and President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, will step in as special advisor for sports at the flagship GEMS School of Research and Innovation that will open in August.

Sebastian Coe, renowned for his monumental achievements in athletics, is significantly influencing the educational landscape as he takes on a pivotal role at the newly established GEMS School of Research and Innovation. Set to open its doors in August, this institution is poised to become a beacon of excellence in education, with Coe’s expertise guiding its vision.

In his position as special advisor for sports, Coe will collaborate closely with the school’s senior leadership team. His objective? To ensure that physical education and wellbeing are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the student experience. By doing so, he aims to help students not only excel in their academic pursuits but also develop the confidence, resilience, and healthy habits necessary for lifelong wellbeing.

Coe’s appreciation for the school’s facilities and its aspirational goals cannot be overstated. He remarked, “The facilities and ambition at SRI are world-class. But more importantly, the vision to develop well-rounded global citizens who understand teamwork, perseverance, and personal bests is one I wholeheartedly share.” This statement underscores his commitment to nurturing a generation that values not just competition but also collaboration and personal growth.

The GEMS School of Research and Innovation is designed to be nothing short of revolutionary in its approach. Often referred to as the “most expensive school,” it boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a 400-meter running track, a 50-meter Olympic-standard swimming pool, a FIFA-standard elevated football pitch, and a world-class gymnasium. These facilities will not only support elite athletic training but also offer students unparalleled opportunities to engage in diverse sports and physical activities.

Highlighting the significance of Coe’s appointment, Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of GEMS Education, emphasized how his extensive experience in athletics will be instrumental in crafting a future-ready educational model. Varkey noted that Coe’s insights will assist in shaping a curriculum where sports and academics harmoniously coexist, paving the way for holistic student development.

Coe is not the only notable figure associated with the school. The institution has also welcomed esteemed personalities to advisory roles, including former UK foreign secretary William Hague, Amanda Spielman, the former Chief Inspector of Ofsted, and former UK Minister of State for Schools Nick Gibb. Their diverse expertise adds additional layers of credibility and insight, enriching the school’s mission of fostering a cutting-edge educational environment.
