UAE Transport and Supply Chain System Strengthens Resilience Amid Regional Challenges, Says Al Mazrouei

Abu Dhabi: The UAE’s transport and supply chain system remains robust and efficient, according to Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of the Supply and Transport Committee. He emphasized that the system’s effectiveness is underpinned by a proactive and integrated national approach, which is crucial in navigating regional challenges.

Al Mazrouei noted that the ongoing operations reflect a high level of resilience, enhancing the seamless flow of goods across the nation. He highlighted the importance of flexible infrastructure that supports sustainable supply chains, as well as the diverse and integrated transport channels spanning maritime, land, and rail sectors.

Since recent developments began, container handling has surpassed 262,000 containers, with around 4,800 trucks operating daily to bolster connectivity between ports. Additionally, approximately 1,200 vessels have been monitored within UAE waters for supply and services.

Enhancing Connectivity and Cooperation

Al Mazrouei pointed out that efforts to strengthen connectivity between Gulf coast ports and the eastern coast are facilitated by an integrated trucking network. This initiative is supported by various measures, including the lifting of movement restrictions and fee exemptions. Effective regional and international cooperation has also played a vital role in ensuring the uninterrupted flow of goods.

The governance of the transport and supply chain system is managed through the Supply and Transport Committee, which operates under a comprehensive national framework. This framework emphasizes collaboration with the private sector and coordination among over 20 federal, local, and operational entities. Clear governance mechanisms prioritize efficiency and sustainability, ensuring direct operational connectivity between ports, land border crossings, and the railway network.

Al Mazrouei highlighted the critical role of the national team overseeing the supply and transport sector. Specialized operational teams manage flow, data, and logistics, operating a national operations room around the clock. This team monitors shipment movements in real time, prioritizes vessel entry and departure in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, and addresses operational challenges promptly. Routes are adjusted based on operational pressure levels, ensuring continuous coordination with relevant entities and operators.

Infrastructure Investments and Community Support

The Minister underscored the significant impact of infrastructure investments on enhancing supply chain readiness. Capacity at eastern coast ports has increased twentyfold, while daily truck movement has risen thirtyfold compared to previous levels. The number of cooling points has expanded from 490 to over 2,400 electrical outlets, and the number of cranes has exceeded 30. Furthermore, over 7 million square meters of storage space have been made available, including dedicated areas at Fujairah Port for handling more than 2.8 million metric tons of bulk cargo arriving from GCC countries.

Al Mazrouei emphasized the strong societal awareness and confidence in the national system, which reflects a solid partnership between the community and government entities. He noted that the integration of government and private sector efforts reinforces a model that enhances service sustainability and strengthens social cohesion. He expressed pride in the exceptional solidarity and responsible national spirit demonstrated by the UAE community, affirming that the nation’s strength is rooted in the awareness and unity of its people.

Mohammed Al Mansoori, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, confirmed that flexible facilitations provided to transport companies have significantly supported the logistics sector. These measures have enhanced efficiency and ensured the smooth flow of goods during the current phase.

Streamlined Operations and Port Performance

Al Mansoori detailed the facilitations that include activating alternative routes, lifting restrictions on truck movement between ports, and coordinating with local authorities to remove transit bans on roads. These actions have accelerated transport operations and reduced travel times. Additionally, gate fees have been waived on routes connecting the eastern coast with other ports, customs corridors have been activated to expedite clearance procedures, and vehicle entry procedures have been simplified across GCC countries.

He noted that operations since early March have been a strong indicator of the efficiency and readiness of UAE ports. The integrated capabilities of the UAE’s port system enhance its responsiveness to various developments. Al Mansoori highlighted the advanced and scalable operational capacity that allows ports to efficiently absorb increases in demand, along with operational integration with the railway network and land border crossings to ensure smooth cargo movement.

Strategic Role of Ports and National Carriers

Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority, affirmed that the smooth flow of logistics operations reflects a high level of national integration among federal, local, and operational entities. This integration has improved port efficiency and maintained a continuous flow of goods and services.

He explained that eastern coast ports serve as a strategic pillar within the national system, diversifying supply chain routes and reinforcing the UAE’s position as a regional logistics hub and a key player in global trade.

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, stated that national carriers are crucial in ensuring the continuity of supply chains. They strengthen maritime transport capabilities and provide integrated logistics solutions that align with global developments. The high readiness of the national fleet, combined with operational flexibility, has ensured stable and efficient goods flow during emergencies, enhancing supply security and reinforcing the UAE’s reputation as a trusted global hub for maritime trade.

Abdulla bin Damithan, Chairman of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation in Dubai, affirmed that the UAE’s advanced operational indicators reflect its capacity to adapt to rapid changes in global trade with high efficiency and readiness. He noted that the resilience of supply chains and increased container handling rates demonstrate the integration of the national logistics system.

Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, emphasized that the UAE’s national railway network is essential for strengthening the integration of the country’s transport system. It has successfully connected ports with land border crossings and logistics zones, boosting trade movement both domestically and regionally. Since the launch of freight rail operations in February 2023, the network has delivered significant economic benefits and supported growth, further reinforcing the UAE’s position as a global logistics hub.
