Emirates Unveils $5 Billion Retrofit Program with Humorous ‘DIY Dubai’ Gameshow Parody Video
Dubai: Emirates has introduced a new video that humorously showcases its extensive retrofit program, a monumental $5 billion initiative aimed at refurbishing the interiors of 219 aircraft. The video, which parodies popular home renovation television shows, highlights the airline’s commitment to providing an exceptional flying experience. It features the Emirates team collaborating on what is recognized as the largest aviation retrofit project in history.
The narrative centers around an Emirates Captain and his family, who opt to renovate a Boeing 777 aircraft instead of their home in a fictional gameshow titled “Do It Yourself Dubai.” The Captain expresses excitement as the scene transitions to the Emirates Engineering facility, where engineers are prepared to execute this unprecedented aviation project.
Overview of the Retrofit Program
The Emirates retrofit program represents a comprehensive overhaul of the aircraft cabins, involving the removal of existing interiors and the installation of new designs and seating focused on customer comfort. This initiative includes next-generation seating, modernized washrooms, enhanced storage, improved inflight connectivity, and a luxurious aesthetic that elevates the travel experience.
Integral to the retrofit is the introduction of a new Premium Economy cabin class across all aircraft. This award-winning class sets a new standard for elevated travel, featuring spacious reclining seats, integrated leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, in-seat charging, a side table, and a 13.3-inch entertainment screen. Passengers can also enjoy a selection of premium beverages, including red and white wines and exclusive Chandon sparkling wine.
Technological Enhancements
As part of the retrofit, Emirates is seizing the opportunity to install Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet, providing complimentary, high-speed internet access for all passengers, even at cruising altitudes of 40,000 feet. This upgrade allows customers to stream content, play games, make calls, work, and browse social media on their devices.
Beginning in October 2026, Emirates will also equip 60 A380s and 51 Boeing 777s with 4K OLED HDR10+ display screens on seatbacks, offering vivid colors and rich, multi-dimensional sound. This enhancement will be compatible with both Emirates’ premium headsets and personal wireless devices via Bluetooth.
Economy Class passengers will benefit from the introduction of new, lightweight Safran Z400 seats designed for comfort and convenience, featuring an adjustable eight-way headrest and upgraded in-seat charging capabilities.
Upgrades Across Cabin Classes
Emirates is continuing to enhance its Business Class with sophisticated seating inspired by the luxurious leather S Lounge seats found on its A350 fleet. These seats provide a more private space and include wireless charging integrated into the side cocktail table, customizable in-seat lighting, additional storage, minibar amenities, and multiple charging options including USB-C and wireless ports.
In First Class, often described as a “hotel room in the sky,” passengers will enjoy spacious, private suites equipped with electronically controlled privacy doors, personal temperature controls, and adjustable mood lighting. The retrofit will also feature the A380 Onboard shower and sofas in the A380 Onboard Lounge. Additionally, Emirates is introducing the latest generation of Bowers & Wilkins First Class headphones, the E2, which offer significantly improved noise cancellation for an immersive inflight experience.
To date, Emirates has successfully completed 94 aircraft makeovers, with 125 more scheduled for refurbishment.
The DIY Dubai Concept
The Emirates retrofit initiative is characterized as a “DIY Dubai” project, with every aircraft being refurbished by the airline’s Engineering team. The process takes 18 days for a Boeing 777 and 22 days for the larger A380 model, with engineers working around the clock to complete each retrofit.
The concept for the “DIY Dubai” video was developed in-house at Emirates and filmed in a studio in Prague, as well as onboard actual aircraft in Dubai. A diverse cast of actors represented the Emirates teams, with production handled by Framestore Pictures in London under the direction of William Bartlett and Simon Willows.
From May 2026, the video will be widely distributed, reinforcing Emirates’ commitment to providing an unparalleled travel experience characterized by sleek and luxurious interiors, comfortable seating, award-winning inflight entertainment, regionally inspired cuisine, and world-class cabin crew.
Passengers can experience the retrofitted aircraft featured in the video, including the 777-300ER and 777-200LR, which are currently flying to and from Dubai across 40 destinations, with an additional 10 destinations to be added soon. The current destinations include major cities such as Athens, Barcelona, Beijing, and Tokyo, with upcoming additions including Brisbane, Singapore, and Milan.
