Paul Scholes Identifies Eight Manchester United Players to Sell This Summer for Premier League Challenge

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has pinpointed eight players he believes the club should consider selling this summer. This move is seen as essential for the team to enhance its competitiveness in both the Premier League and the Champions League. The club is currently under the interim management of Michael Carrick, who is contracted until the end of the season, as they strive for a Champions League qualification.

Current Management and Squad Dynamics

There has been significant discussion regarding Carrick potentially taking on the managerial role permanently. However, Manchester United is not rushing to appoint a successor for Ruben Amorim, who previously managed the team. The club made substantial investments in the last transfer window to avoid a repeat of last season’s disappointing performance.

Despite these efforts, Manchester United remains far from being a title contender. The ongoing challenges related to Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) and the upcoming Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) mean that the club must offload players to facilitate necessary squad renovations.

Players Targeted for Sale

In a recent appearance on a podcast, Scholes discussed which players he would retain and which he would let go. He expressed concerns about defender Leny Yoro, stating that while he sees potential in the player, he would likely choose to sell him at this point.

Scholes also criticized Noussair Mazraoui, suggesting that he should be sold as he does not fit into the current tactical setup. He noted that the team no longer employs a three-centre-back formation, making Mazraoui’s role unclear.

When discussing Luke Shaw, Scholes acknowledged Shaw’s past performances but indicated that he would also consider selling him due to his inconsistent appearances this season.

Patrick Dorgu, another player brought in to fit Amorim’s system, has not made a significant impact, leading Scholes to question his position within the squad. He remarked that Dorgu might only serve as a squad player if retained.

Midfield Considerations

With Casemiro’s departure from Old Trafford, Manchester United is expected to bolster its midfield. However, Scholes suggested that Mason Mount should also be considered for sale, despite acknowledging his talent. He pointed out that Mount is unlikely to displace Bruno Fernandes in the starting lineup and does not play enough to justify his retention.

Scholes also mentioned Manuel Ugarte, indicating that he believes Ugarte will leave the club. Additionally, he suggested that Joshua Zirkzee might be another player on the way out.

Harry Maguire’s Future

Harry Maguire recently signed a new contract with Manchester United, but Scholes expressed doubts about Maguire’s ability to contribute to the club’s ambitions of winning the league or the Champions League. While he praised Maguire’s resurgence, he emphasized that the club needs to aim higher.

Scholes compared Maguire to other top defenders, suggesting that unless he has a partner of the caliber of Rio Ferdinand, he may not be the right fit for a title-contending team. He mentioned Matthijs de Ligt as a preferable option, noting that De Ligt is younger and quicker.
