Arab League Ministers Convene to Address Unprovoked Iranian Attacks Threatening Regional Sovereignty
The Council of the League of Arab States held an extraordinary session via videoconference on March 8, 2026, chaired by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The meeting focused on the recent Iranian attacks that have targeted the sovereignty and territorial integrity of several Arab nations, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
Iranian Attacks Violate International Law
During the session, Khalifa bin Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State, condemned the Iranian assaults as “sinister, cowardly, and unjustified.” He highlighted that these attacks represent an unprovoked violation of international law, endangering the security and stability of Arab states and the broader region.
The extraordinary session addressed Resolution No. 9241, which details the Iranian attacks on the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq. Al Marar emphasized that none of these countries are involved in the ongoing armed conflict with Iran. Instead, they have made significant efforts to mediate and avoid escalating tensions.
Ongoing Threats and Civilian Impact
Al Marar noted that since February 28, Iran has launched indiscriminate attacks using ballistic missiles and drones, targeting civilian infrastructure such as commercial ports, airports, shopping centers, and residential areas. These assaults have resulted in civilian casualties and significant destruction of property.
He characterized these actions as a full-scale act of aggression and a blatant violation of national sovereignty. Al Marar stated that the continued Iranian attacks breach international law, the UN Charter, and principles of good neighborliness.
Preparedness of Arab States
The Minister of State acknowledged the vigilance and preparedness of the armed forces and air defense systems in the targeted countries, which have mitigated the potential catastrophic consequences of these attacks. He expressed pride in the efforts made to protect the populace and uphold national sovereignty against Iranian aggression.
Al Marar also pointed out that the attacks have disrupted international air traffic and navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening maritime transport and energy security. He reiterated that the UAE is not a party to the conflict with Iran and has never allowed its territory to be used for attacks against Iran.
Call for Accountability and Self-Defense
Al Marar emphasized the need for all Arab states to reject and condemn the Iranian aggression, calling for Iran to be held legally accountable under international law. He reiterated the right of Arab nations to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter and the Arab League’s Joint Defence and Economic Cooperation Treaty.
He urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take decisive action against Iranian aggression. Al Marar called for a binding resolution that would compel Iran to cease its attacks and ensure accountability for its actions.
Support from the International Community
Al Marar expressed gratitude to countries that have condemned the Iranian attacks, recognizing their support as vital in addressing violations of international law that threaten state sovereignty. He encouraged member states of the League of Arab States to back the draft resolution submitted by the Gulf Cooperation Council to the UN Security Council.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the draft resolution titled “Targeting the Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of Arab States Subjected to Iranian Attacks” was adopted, marking a unified stance among Arab nations against the ongoing threats.
