Skinny Menus and Small Plates: The Impact of Weight-Loss Injections on Dubai’s Fine Dining

Date:

## The Influence of Weight Loss Medications on Fine Dining

As more individuals seek weight loss solutions, the landscape of fine dining is adapting in response. Restaurants are reimagining their menus to cater to diners who are becoming increasingly health-conscious, integrating elements like smaller portion sizes and lighter fare into their offerings.

## Changing Clientele in Downtown Dubai

In Downtown Dubai, establishments such as The Banc are experiencing a noticeable shift in customer preferences, particularly among those who are utilizing weight-loss medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy. These medications, known for suppressing appetite, are prompting diners to make more thoughtful choices about what and how much they eat.

### Innovative Menu Adjustments

The Banc is proactively addressing this trend by introducing calorie-conscious options. Co-founder Mazlum Topcu reflects on the initial concern that these medications might deter customers, only to discover that patrons are still dining out—but with a different approach. “Guests are arriving less hungry and are looking for ways to enjoy a meal without drawing attention to their eating habits,” he explains.

To accommodate these desires, The Banc has introduced sharing plates and prepared dishes like pre-sliced steaks to simplify the sharing experience. The restaurant has also rolled out smaller-sized options, such as half-portions of grilled fish and lighter appetizers, including their popular lamb kebabs and wagyu beef tartare.

### Discreet Dining Practices

Not all patrons are open about their choices regarding weight-loss strategies. As Can Topcu, another co-founder of The Banc, notes, “Some diners prefer not to disclose their use of medication.” Many opt for larger spreads, pushing food around their plates, hoping their companions will finish the food. This behavior often leads to excess waste. “Our new approach allows everyone to eat as they wish, making the dining experience more comfortable,” he adds.

Moreover, since these appetite-reducing medications can also dampen cravings for alcohol, The Banc has introduced mini cocktails, allowing guests the pleasure of flavorful drinks without the pressure to consume full-strength options.

## Rising Demand for Weight Loss Solutions

Although precise statistics for the UAE’s weight-loss medication users are not readily available, healthcare providers are noting a marked increase in demand. Reports indicate that over 1,600 individuals have registered for virtual health programs offering GLP-1 weight-loss injections.

Doctor Keswin Suresh states, “We’ve observed a remarkable 100% success rate in terms of weight loss,” with participants typically investing around Dh149 monthly for the program. This surge is not isolated to the UAE; research shows that approximately 13% of American adults have used a GLP-1 agonist for various health benefits, indicating a broader global trend.

## Evolving Dining Habits Across the Globe

In the UK, estimates suggest that around 1.6 million adults are utilizing medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight management. Academic research indicates that interest in such treatments is growing, with around 3.3 million individuals expressing a desire to explore these drugs in the coming year.

### Tailored Dining Experiences at 99 Sushi Bar

Thinus Van Der Westhuizen, culinary director at 99 Sushi Bar, has witnessed the changing dynamics in guest interactions. “Guests are increasingly making mindful choices,” he observes. Rather than opting for individual portions, diners now prefer to share dishes, asking staff for recommendations on balancing richer offerings with lighter options.

The trend is towards less indulgent meals, favoring raw preparations like sashimi over heavier fried items. The demand for half-portions and flexible tasting menus has surged, allowing patrons to enjoy a variety of flavors without overindulging.

## A New Approach to Fine Dining

As the dining landscape evolves, patrons are prioritizing a balanced lifestyle rather than indulging excessively. No longer is luxury dining synonymous with large portions; today’s guests seek clarity and control over their choices, focusing on wellness without compromising on quality.

### Mindfulness in Dining

Narjesene Rasheed, head of wellness at Kaya Clinics ME, emphasizes that the rise of medical weight-loss solutions is reshaping social habits around dining. She notes that people are now focusing on selective eating and prioritizing nutritious options, which is changing how social gatherings unfold.

Rather than avoiding restaurants, many are embracing a more mindful dining experience, opting for protein-rich and vegetable-forward meals, or simply sharing plates among friends. “Dining out is shifting from an experience of excess to one of enjoyment and connection,” she explains.

By incorporating thoughtful choices into meal planning, restaurants can play a crucial role in this transformative phase, offering a dining experience that aligns with wellness aspirations while still ensuring enjoyment.
