Recently, two researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have proposed a comprehensive framework for employing tFUS to explore consciousness. Their newly published paper serves as a roadmap for leveraging tFUS to investigate consciousness more deeply.

Daniel Freeman, one of the co-authors of the paper, emphasizes the significant advantages of this technology: “Transcranial focused ultrasound will let you stimulate different parts of the brain in healthy subjects, in ways you just couldn’t before.” This capability not only holds promise for medical applications but also has the potential to illuminate the intricacies of human thought and perception.

Advantages of Transcranial Focused Ultrasound

tFUS stands out as a non-invasive method capable of reaching deeper brain areas with greater resolution compared to traditional brain stimulation techniques such as transcranial magnetic or electrical stimulation. Matthias Michel, another co-author, underscores the tool’s unique value, stating, “There are very few reliable ways of manipulating brain activity that are safe but also work.”

The paper titled Transcranial Focused Ultrasound for Identifying the Neural Substrate of Conscious Perception has been published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. The authors include not only Freeman and Michel but also experts from various institutions, showcasing a collaborative approach to understanding consciousness.

Pinpointing Brain Causality

Studying the human brain is inherently challenging, particularly when focusing on healthy individuals. Outside of invasive surgical methods, researchers have limited avenues to probe the deepest brain structures. Current non-invasive methods like MRIs and electroencephalograms (EEGs) provide only peripheral insights. In contrast, tFUS allows targeted stimulation by transmitting acoustic waves through the skull, reaching specific brain areas to explore the effects of stimulation in real-time.

Freeman notes the revolutionary aspect of tFUS: “It truly is the first time in history that one can modulate activity deep in the brain, centimeters from the scalp.” This advancement opens up the possibility of investigating emotional circuits that have not been easily accessible until now.

Unraveling Consciousness Through Modulation

One of the critical advantages of tFUS is its potential to clarify the cause-and-effect relationships within the brain. Many existing studies link brain activity to visual stimuli without establishing whether the measured activity is a byproduct of consciousness or integral to its generation. By manipulating neural activity directly, researchers can better understand the elements that contribute to consciousness.

As articulated by Michel, “Transcranial focused ultrasound gives us a solution to that problem.” The paper further outlines two primary paradigms of consciousness—the cognitivist view, which relies on higher-level mental processes, and the non-cognitivist standpoint, suggesting that specific neural patterns can create subjective experiences.

Targeted Experimental Queries

To harness the benefits of tFUS effectively, the researchers propose a targeted approach to their experiments. They aim to investigate questions such as:

  • What role does the prefrontal cortex play in conscious perception?
  • Is conscious perception generated locally, or does it involve broader brain networks?
  • How are perceptions from distant brain regions integrated into a single conscious experience?
  • What functions do subcortical structures serve in conscious activity?

By modulating brain activity related to visual stimuli, researchers can inch closer to identifying the precise brain areas essential for cultivating self-awareness and other forms of consciousness.

Looking Ahead: Upcoming Experiments

Freeman and Michel are not merely outlining theories; they plan to conduct experiments focused initially on stimulating the visual cortex. Subsequent studies will target higher-order areas within the frontal cortex. While existing methods like EEG can reveal basic neuronal responses, these new experiments aim to construct a more nuanced understanding of visual perception and its associated brain processes.

Offering his perspective, Freeman remarks, “It’s one thing to say if these neurons responded electrically. It’s another thing to say if a person saw light.”

Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Michel is actively involved in fostering interest in consciousness studies at MIT. He co-founded the MIT Consciousness Club alongside Earl Miller, aiming to spark interdisciplinary dialogue and research on consciousness. Supported by the MIT Human Insight Collaborative, this initiative will host regular events centered around the latest advancements in consciousness research.
