New French Bakery KAYU Set to Open in Upper East Side
A Slice of Luxury Arrives in New York
The Upper East Side is about to welcome KAYU, a luxury bakery and café originally from Dubai, marking its first venture into the U.S. market. Scheduled to open in early 2026, the café will be located on East 82nd Street, just off Third Avenue, providing residents and passersby with a taste of French-inspired elegance.
Vision Behind KAYU
Ibrahim Al Sayed, the owner of KAYU, transitioned from a career in private equity to the culinary world during the COVID-19 lockdown. Teaming up with award-winning pastry chef Karim Bourgi, Al Sayed opened his first café during a time when many were adjusting to life away from the office. “We met during COVID, and I thought, ‘Since I’m in finance and we’re out of the office, how about we start a little bakery until everyone goes back to the office?’” Al Sayed recounts. Little did he know, this venture would lead him to shift careers entirely.
KAYU has expanded significantly since its inception, now operating five locations across affluent neighborhoods in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Riyadh, and London. Al Sayed views the bakery as an investment, treating each opening with the same diligence and strategy that defined his previous career.
The Unique Characteristics of KAYU
Growing up in Montreal, Al Sayed sees the Upper East Side location as his largest and most ambitious project to date. “It’s the most expensive location I’ve signed and is the biggest,” he shares. “But in business, you have to take risks.” While some advisors suggested locations in Soho or Midtown, Al Sayed had a different vision. He aims to foster relationships with repeat customers and develop a community atmosphere, which he believes is better achieved in the Upper East Side.
Craftsmanship Takes Time
KAYU distinguishes itself not only with its elegant ambiance but also through its meticulous baking processes. For example, the croissants undergo a 48-hour preparation period due to the intricate dough lamination process. The café prioritizes quality by sourcing many ingredients directly from France, including authentic butter, cream, and chocolate, ensuring that each pastry meets high culinary standards.
What to Expect on the Menu
Patrons can look forward to a diverse array of classic French pastries, including eclairs, tarts, cakes, croissants, brioche, mille-feuille, and financiers. However, Al Sayed assures that the menu will maintain a focus on traditional French flavors. While some Middle Eastern-inspired elements may appear—think saffron, cardamom, orange blossom, and Turkish coffee—he is committed to avoiding fleeting trends. “We’ve mostly rejected trends and focused on a DNA that respects the ingredients and French flavors and techniques,” Al Sayed explains.
The Future is Bright for KAYU
KAYU is set to occupy a significant space at 1444 Third Avenue, creating excitement among local foodies and those eager for a new gourmet experience. As the anticipated opening draws closer, it will undoubtedly become a sought-after destination for both locals and visitors.
For anyone familiar with the pulse of Manhattan, KAYU represents a remarkable addition to the city’s vibrant culinary landscape. As preparations continue for the upcoming launch, the community looks forward to indulging in the luxurious pastries and warm atmosphere that KAYU promises to deliver.
