Emirates Launches Humanitarian Airbridge to Aid Sri Lanka
In a significant move to provide emergency assistance, Emirates Airlines, in collaboration with Dubai Humanitarian, has established a humanitarian airbridge to deliver vital aid to Sri Lanka. This initiative is a response to the extensive destruction inflicted by Cyclone Ditwah, which has left many communities grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding and displacement.
Over the upcoming two weeks, Emirates will allocate more than 100 tonnes of cargo capacity at no cost, utilizing its daily passenger flights to Colombo. This generous offer aims to bolster relief operations for families affected by the cyclone, ensuring that essential supplies reach those in desperate need.
Support from the Sri Lankan Community in the UAE
The airbridge initiative aligns with ongoing relief efforts spearheaded by the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission based in the UAE. Sri Lanka’s Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Alexi Gunasekera, has made an impassioned plea for support from the diverse UAE community, which includes approximately 240,000 Sri Lankans alongside individuals from around 200 different nationalities. He urged everyone to join forces to aid Sri Lanka during this critical period.
“We encourage every resident to come forward and support the relief and reconstruction endeavors as we face this crisis together,” Gunasekera stated, emphasizing the spirit of unity that characterizes the UAE’s multicultural landscape. His appeal resonates as both a call to action and a reminder of communal solidarity.
The First Shipment of Relief Supplies
The first batch of relief supplies has already departed from Dubai International Airport. This shipment, which left on December 9, included fortified biscuits generously provided by the World Food Programme. Subsequent shipments are expected to deliver food supplies, tarpaulins, and other essential items, coordinated by the Sri Lankan Consulate in Dubai as well as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
In Colombo, local authorities are fully engaged, having set up a specialized disaster management unit dedicated to facilitating the distribution of incoming aid. This unit is crucial for ensuring that the assistance reaches the most affected communities efficiently and effectively.
Strengthening Ties Between Emirates and Sri Lanka
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, spoke about the initiative, underscoring the longstanding and meaningful ties between the airline and Sri Lanka. “Emirates is deeply connected to Sri Lanka. In collaboration with Dubai Humanitarian, we are leveraging our resources and operational reach to deliver essential support to those communities impacted by Cyclone Ditwah,” he remarked, highlighting the airline’s commitment to humanitarian efforts.
The airbridge and the broader relief efforts not only reflect Emirates’ operational capabilities but also underline the critical role that organizations can play in times of crisis, coming together to provide critical aid to those who need it most.
