Name Our Crane: A Unique Competition by Drydocks World
Introduction to a Maritime Marvel
Drydocks World, a prominent name in Dubai’s maritime industry and a subsidiary of DP World, has initiated an exciting competition to name a remarkable new addition to its engineering fleet—a floating crane with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes. This crane is not only the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, but it also illustrates Drydocks World’s commitment to innovative engineering in the maritime sector.
A Legacy of Excellence
Drydocks World first opened its doors in Mina Rashid, under the guidance of Dubai’s visionary leader, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, back in 1979. For over 40 years, it has played a crucial role in establishing the UAE as a global maritime and industrial powerhouse. The shipyard has gained a reputation for repairing some of the largest tankers worldwide and constructing advanced floating infrastructure.
Invitation to the Community
In a bid to foster community involvement, Drydocks World is inviting all Dubai residents—regardless of profession or background—to participate in naming this impressive crane. This initiative encourages engineers, students, poets, and business professionals alike to suggest names that embody the crane’s purpose and its significance to the community.
Details of the Floating Sheerleg Crane
The Floating Sheerleg Crane, currently in the construction phase by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC), is set to arrive in Dubai by the summer of 2026. However, the naming decision must be finalized soon, as it will be etched onto the crane during the production phase. This name will become part of its identity for decades, making it a meaningful contribution to Dubai’s maritime landscape.
Impressive Specifications
Designed for heavy lifting, this crane will be capable of hoisting loads up to 5,000 tonnes, equivalent to lifting 400 double-decker buses or twenty-five wide-body aircraft. When fully extended, its reach of 180 meters will rival the height of the iconic Burj Al Arab, elevating its status among the world’s most powerful cranes.
A Symbol of Engineering Excellence
H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, emphasized that this crane transcends machinery; it symbolizes Dubai’s ambition, resilience, and engineering prowess. He highlighted the extraordinary nature of this project and invited the people of Dubai to contribute a name that resonates with the shared values and vision of the emirate.
Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, the CEO of Drydocks World, echoed this sentiment by noting that the crane represents a significant leap forward in the scale, capability, and innovation of maritime operations in the UAE.
How to Participate in the Competition
The naming competition is open to all residents of Dubai. Participants are encouraged to propose names that reflect cross-cultural significance and embody themes of strength, maritime heritage, innovation, and a forward-looking vision for the UAE.
To enter, participants should submit their suggested names in either Arabic or English, accompanied by a brief explanation of the meaning and inspiration behind their choice. A panel of experts, which includes Drydocks World leadership, Emirati cultural figures, and branding specialists, will shortlist names for consideration.
Exciting Prize for Participants
As part of the competition, one lucky participant will have the chance to win a signed full-size 2025 McLaren Racing helmet, coinciding with the excitement of the F1 Championship finale at the Yas Marina Circuit in December.
