Alserkal and Design Miami Unveil Exciting Collectible Design Platform in Dubai

Date:

Dubai is set to become a new hub for collectible design with a groundbreaking partnership between Alserkal, a local cultural enterprise, and Design Miami. Announced on Tuesday, this collaboration will introduce a regional platform focused on collectible design, launching in early 2027. This marks Design Miami’s first foray into the Middle Eastern market.

Elevating Middle Eastern Design

The collaboration is significant, as it ties Alserkal’s 15-year expertise in nurturing Dubai’s contemporary art scene with Design Miami’s two decades of experience bringing together world-class galleries, designers, and collectors in cities like Miami and Paris. The goal is to create a triangular network connecting these pivotal cultural centers, thereby amplifying the visibility of Middle Eastern design on a global scale.

Strategic Cultural Exchange

Vilma Jurkute, Executive Director of Alserkal, expressed excitement over the timing of this partnership, noting that it comes at a crucial moment for design in the region. “Design has been deeply embedded in our ecosystem. This collaboration amplifies voices and ideas thriving here,” she shared in an email to ARTnews. The partnership is framed as a means to facilitate cultural exchange among Miami, Paris, and Dubai, thus establishing a design forum anchored in shared values and innovative thinking.

UNESCO Recognizes Dubai as a Creative Capital

Dubai’s ascent as a creative capital is underscored by its recent designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Design. Alserkal reports that design-related activities now constitute 52% of the city’s cultural GDP, highlighting the growing importance of design within Dubai’s cultural framework.

A Blueprint for Contemporary Art

Jurkute remarked that the UAE is emerging as a leading model for contemporary art in the region, calling for a platform that matches its stature. She emphasized that positioning this initiative in Dubai showcases the city’s expanding role in international cultural exchange and strengthens the region’s contribution to the global collectible design market.

Global Language of Design

According to Jen Roberts, CEO of Design Miami, this partnership offers the chance to present design as a “global language.” Jesse Lee, chairman of Design Miami, echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration merges two decades of expertise in the collectible design sector with Alserkal’s vital contributions to Dubai’s cultural landscape.

Looking Ahead

Details regarding the programming and curatorial direction for this new platform are expected to be revealed in the coming months, paving the way for an exciting chapter in Dubai’s cultural narrative.
