Dubai has officially earned the title of the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere, marking a monumental achievement in the city’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This distinction is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the tourism proposition in Dubai, making it welcoming for all residents and visitors, including those with autism and sensory sensitivities.
This recognition aligns seamlessly with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which emphasizes talent development, social inclusion, and the overall quality of life. It also supports the UAE Year of Community initiative, focused on creating inclusive environments that foster collaboration and shared experiences. The aim is to ensure that everyone feels a sense of belonging within the vibrant community of Dubai.
Awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), known for its expertise in autism and sensory training, the journey to achieving this certification was led by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). Their dedication to accessibility reflects a citywide effort involving various stakeholders committed to enhancing every aspect of the visitor experience.
To achieve the Certified Autism Destination status, significant initiatives were implemented. Comprehensive staff training programs were rolled out across hotels, attractions, and transportation networks to ensure that service providers are well-equipped to support visitors with special needs. This included expanded visitor support and the introduction of sensory guides and hidden disability lanyards to facilitate seamless interactions.
Every certified location underwent an in-depth onsite review and was provided with custom sensory guides developed by IBCCES. This personalized touch ensured that all certified venues are truly ready to welcome visitors who may require additional support. From hotels to recreational sites, the city’s commitment to accessibility is evident.
Central to this achievement is the ‘Dubai Way’ online training platform, established by the Dubai College of Tourism (DCT). This initiative empowers the tourism workforce with the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver a more inclusive experience for People of Determination, a term that encompasses individuals with disabilities.
DCT has also maintained its Inclusive Service program, providing a self-paced course on the Dubai Way platform. This training includes real-life stories, interactive sessions, and videos aimed at fostering empathy and understanding, ensuring that diversity is embedded in everyday interactions with all visitors.
Over the past two years, more than 70,000 individuals in Dubai have benefited from autism and sensory awareness training. The hospitality sector has seen substantial engagement, with over 300 hotels participating in training and certification to offer inclusive accommodations for guests with autism and sensory sensitivities. Additionally, over 15 local attractions, as well as several beaches and parks, have received IBCCES certifications, encapsulating the city’s holistic approach to accessibility.
Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), emphasized that this certification is a significant milestone in Dubai’s ongoing journey towards better accessibility. He noted that this accomplishment reflects a collective commitment to improving not just infrastructure but also the skills and services available across the city.
This initiative dovetails with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which seeks to solidify Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for business and leisure. Kazim reaffirmed the city’s dedication to continually innovate and expand its offerings, striving to make Dubai a top destination for everyone.
Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman and CEO, praised Dubai for setting a high standard in accessible tourism. He highlighted how this achievement enables all visitors, including those with autism, to explore and experience the city confidently and comfortably.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) has also set a precedent by becoming the first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Center designation. This initiative has involved expanding the hidden disability and autism-inclusive training program, ensuring that around 45,000 employees across the airport community are equipped to support travelers with autism and sensory sensitivities.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, accentuated the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere for all travelers, emphasizing that Dubai International, as a pivotal gateway for millions, has a responsibility to foster an inclusive environment.
Emirates Airlines has taken significant strides toward becoming the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, receiving certifications for its check-in areas and training over 30,000 staff members to assist autistic customers effectively. Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer of Emirates, stressed the airline’s commitment to improving accessibility in travel.
Expo City Dubai stands out as another key contributor to this initiative. Recently certified as a Certified Autism Center, the city’s attractions are now better prepared to host and support autistic visitors and those with sensory sensitivities, showcasing the potential for thriving tourism when accessibility is prioritized.
Dubai Holding Entertainment also plays a crucial role in this mission, with attractions like Motiongate Dubai and The Green Planet achieving Certified Autism Center status. Alanood Al Hashemi, Vice President of Organisational Culture and Impact, reiterated the organization’s commitment to ensuring that its venues are enjoyable and accessible to everyone.
To facilitate awareness and access, all certified locations in Dubai will be featured on the IBCCES Accessibility App, which provides real-time guidance on sensory-friendly spaces and tailored recommendations. This enhances awareness and accessibility for travelers planning their visits to Dubai.
