Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with Majid Al Futtaim Properties, has recently unveiled a remarkable infrastructure advancement designed to transform travel and access around one of the city’s most iconic landmarks—the Mall of the Emirates. This project centers around a new 300-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road that promises a significant reduction in travel time for motorists, improved traffic flow, enhanced safety, and better pedestrian connectivity.
The newly introduced single-lane bridge directly connects Sheikh Zayed Road to the Mall of the Emirates’ car parks, specifically benefiting drivers coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali. Engineered to handle up to 900 vehicles per hour, this strategic infrastructure cuts down the travel time from a typical 10 minutes to an impressive one minute. This swift connection is expected to greatly ease traffic congestion and streamline access to one of Dubai’s busiest commercial hubs.
Accompanying the bridge development are crucial upgrades to nearby roads and junctions that further optimize traffic efficiency. The southbound ramp at the Umm Suqeim junction has been widened, and the junction itself improved, facilitating smoother access from Umm Suqeim Street to the bridge and the mall’s parking areas. Additionally, the road near the Kempinski Hotel has been converted from one-way to two-way traffic, significantly enhancing the overall traffic circulation and reducing bottlenecks in this bustling area.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to bolster road infrastructure to support key real estate developments and retail centers. The upgrades aim to alleviate congestion, improve mobility for both residents and visitors, and elevate road safety standards around the mall and neighboring districts.
Beyond the bridge and road modifications, the project encompasses extensive infrastructure enhancements across 2.5 kilometers of roads surrounding the Mall of the Emirates. The development includes the installation of six signalized intersections designed to streamline traffic flow further. Commuter convenience has also been boosted with upgrades to the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station, ensuring smoother transit connections for public transport users.
The project has also placed significant emphasis on non-motorized transport options. Pedestrian walkways and cycling tracks have been enhanced, promoting safer and more accessible alternatives to driving. Moreover, the area benefits from improved road paving, upgraded lighting, state-of-the-art traffic signal systems, enhanced stormwater drainage, and thoughtful landscaping, which together improve both aesthetics and functionality for all users.
Looking forward, the RTA has ambitious plans to continue expanding and refining Dubai’s road network through the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project. This large-scale 6-kilometer development extends from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road and includes substantial upgrades such as six modernized junctions, the construction of four new bridges, and the creation of two tunnels totaling 3,450 meters in length. These new structures aim to reduce traffic conflicts and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow, particularly at critical intersections such as Umm Suqeim Street with Jumeirah Street and Al Wasl Street.
Key components of this future project involve tunnels with dual lanes in each direction, additional lane expansions to increase road capacity, and bridge crossings that enhance connectivity between major roads and industrial zones. Collectively, these enhancements are set to significantly reduce congestion and improve travel efficiency across vital parts of Dubai’s roadway network.
In parallel with these transportation advancements, the Mall of the Emirates is also undergoing a dramatic transformation to meet rising demand and celebrate its 20th anniversary. Majid Al Futtaim has announced an ambitious Dh5 billion redevelopment project that will expand the mall by 20,000 square meters of new retail space. This expansion will introduce up to 100 new luxury, fashion, and lifestyle outlets, enhancing the mall’s status as a premier shopping destination.
The redevelopment will also feature a new health club, a cultural centre, a dedicated dining district, and comprehensive infrastructure upgrades aimed at enriching the visitor experience. The Mall of the Emirates is complemented by three five-star hotels—the Kempinski Hotel, Novotel Suites Mall Avenue Dubai, and Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel—and is seamlessly connected to the Dubai Metro via a pedestrian bridge, ensuring easy and convenient access for millions of visitors each year.
Together, these interconnected infrastructure projects and commercial redevelopments signify Dubai’s commitment to sustainable urban growth, improved mobility, and world-class lifestyle offerings in one of its most vibrant districts.
