Since its inception in 2016, Expand North Star has grown to become the world’s largest gathering of startups and investors, solidifying Dubai’s role as a central hub in the global digital economy. This annual event has been instrumental in connecting thousands of digital startups with substantial investment opportunities and strategic alliances that have propelled their growth on an international scale.
Organized by the Dubai World Trade Centre and hosted by the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, the 2025 edition, scheduled from October 12 to 15 at Dubai Harbour, celebrates its tenth anniversary. Over the years, Expand North Star has evolved into a vital launchpad for startups, linking innovative minds with capital and markets, thereby reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a global epicenter for digital advancement.
The impact of the event resonates worldwide, with success stories cutting across diverse sectors and continents. A standout example is Nigerian fintech company Moove, which secured over US$460 million from heavyweight investors such as Uber and BlackRock. This impressive funding helped Moove expand its footprint to 13 global markets and approach unicorn status with an estimated valuation near US$750 million. Other notable mentions include the French virtual agent developer Obo, which raised US$20 million in 2024, and Indian startups Freshcraft Technologies and Zaara Biotech, which garnered US$12.7 million and US$10 million respectively, with the latter establishing its presence in the UAE.
Startups in earlier stages of development have also benefited richly from Expand North Star’s ecosystem. For instance, ShopDoc raised US$1.36 million, Machbee Innovations followed with US$1.1 million, and Orgaayur Productions secured US$58,000 to drive innovations in urban agriculture. These achievements underscore the event’s inclusive nature, providing funding avenues for startups at various growth phases.
Beyond financing, the event serves as a springboard for global expansion. Highlights include UK-based Lorien Finance’s 2023 launch of its Middle East growth strategy and the meteoric rise of DeepSeek AI, which showcased at the 2024 expo and quickly gained global recognition. These successes illustrate the tremendous potential Expand North Star holds for tech pioneers seeking to scale on an international level.
Saeed Al Gergawi, Vice President of Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, emphasizes the event’s decade-long track record of fostering innovation and opportunity. He notes that the array of success stories emanating from Expand North Star not only endorses Dubai’s position as a global digital economy leader but also highlights the city as a gateway for startups aiming to achieve worldwide scale.
As a flagship initiative, Expand North Star is deeply aligned with Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy’s overarching mission to position Dubai as a global leader in digital innovation. The Chamber actively attracts leading companies, specialized talent, and forward-thinking investments, crafting a thriving and supportive environment for digital business growth in the city.
In summary, Expand North Star is much more than an event—it is a dynamic ecosystem that continues to inspire and empower startups to secure vital investments, forge meaningful partnerships, and accelerate their journeys on the global stage, all while reinforcing Dubai’s stature as a burgeoning digital economy capital.
