Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide Claim Gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

In an electrifying display of endurance and skill, American ultrarunners Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide solidified their dominance in the world of trail running by each clinching gold medals for Team USA at the Long Trail race during the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships held in Canfranc, Spain.

The Challenge of the Pyrenees

The Long Trail race was no easy feat, stretching an impressive 82 kilometers (50.9 miles) with a staggering elevation gain and descent of 17,750 feet. The race wound through the breathtaking but brutal terrain of the Pyrenees mountain range, which straddles the border between northern Spain and southern France. The rugged landscape tested every runner, but Walmsley and Schide emerged victorious, showcasing their remarkable talent and tenacity.

Walmsley’s Dominance in the Men’s Race

Jim Walmsley, a seasoned 35-year-old runner from Flagstaff, Arizona, executed a masterful strategy during the race. After 47 kilometers (29.2 miles), he surged ahead, leaving French competitors Benjamin Roubiol and Louison Coiffet behind. By the time he reached the 70K mark, Walmsley had established a commanding 7-minute lead. He finished the race in a blistering time of 8 hours, 35 minutes, and 11 seconds—more than 10 minutes ahead of the silver medalists, who crossed the finish line in a joint time of 8:46:05.

Despite facing a minor knee injury earlier in the summer that prevented him from pursuing a fifth victory at the Western States 100, Walmsley’s recent performances indicate a triumphant return. His victory in France’s Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc 61K OCC race set him on a winning streak, leading to this latest world championship title.

“It’s still sinking in, but a lot’s gone into this,” Walmsley remarked post-race, reflecting on his challenging summer and his triumphant end to the year. “The Pyrenees really tested me, and it was a super rugged course. I was happy to get through it smoothly today.”

Schide’s Commanding Performance in the Women’s Race

On the women’s side, 33-year-old Katie Schide from Gardiner, Maine, delivered a stunning performance, finishing ahead of her competitors by an impressive 25 minutes. Her winning time of 9:57:59 was achieved through a combination of strategy and sheer grit, starting with a modest 38-second lead at the 4K mark and steadily building her advantage to nearly 20 minutes by the race’s halfway point. Schide’s perseverance and tactical approach established her as a formidable force in ultrarunning.

“Given how hard the course was, if someone looks like they’re having a hard time, it’s for good reason,” Schide explained. “I just focused on my own effort, playing defense rather than offense.” Her victory adds to her impressive resume, which includes remarkable finishes at prestigious ultramarathons like the Western States and the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc.

Team USA’s Overall Performance

While Walmsley and Schide stole the spotlight, the U.S. team had a strong presence overall. In the men’s competition, France took the team victory based on the combined times of their top three runners, edging out Team USA. Notable U.S. finishes came from Adam Peterman (8th), Zach Miller (18th), and Tracen Knopp (25th). Unfortunately, Caleb Olson of Utah faced a setback and was unable to finish after an early fall.

In the women’s team standings, Italy surpassed Team USA, although American runner Shea Aquilano put in a solid 14th-place finish, further contributing to the team’s overall standing.

Celebrating Achievements Beyond Competition

This championship showcased not just the individual talents of Walmsley and Schide, but also the resilience and competitive spirit of all the athletes involved. The four-day World Mountain and Trail Running Championships continues to foster global competition and camaraderie among trail runners.

Despite the physical toll of the event, the achievements of Team USA are a testament to the growing popularity and recognition of trail running as a significant athletic pursuit. Runner participation and audience engagement are at an all-time high, inspiring a new generation to embrace the trails.

As the championships conclude with additional races, the focus on camaraderie and the shared experiences of the athletes serve as reminders of the incredible challenges and triumphs that trail running embodies.
