Strengthening UAE-Google Partnership

Recently, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, paid a significant visit to Google’s office, marking a pivotal moment in the long-standing relationship between the UAE and the tech giant. Welcomed by Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, Sheikh Hamdan engaged with senior executives, including Anthony Nakache, Google’s Managing Director for the MENA region. This visit underscored the collaboration that began back in 2008 when Google established its largest Middle Eastern-and-North-African office in Dubai, cementing the city as a critical hub for digital innovation and technology in the region.

AI Tools and Economic Impact

During his visit, Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on groundbreaking AI-powered tools like the Gemini personal assistant and NotebookLM. These innovations represent the forefront of technology and emphasize Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced artificial intelligence. He also had the opportunity to preview the Google Economic Impact Report 2024, the inaugural report focusing specifically on the UAE. This comprehensive document highlighted the substantial economic contributions of various Google services, including Search, YouTube, Maps, Cloud, and Ads, illustrating how these platforms generate value and support local businesses.

Accessibility and Inclusion

Sheikh Hamdan took a tour of the newly opened Google Accessibility Discovery Center, the first of its kind in the MENA region and one of only seven worldwide. Launched in September 2024, this center aims to promote the development of inclusive technologies, ensuring that tech advancements benefit everyone, regardless of their abilities. The initiative not only highlights Google’s commitment to accessibility but also aligns with the UAE’s broader vision of inclusion and empowerment in the digital era.

AI Talent Development

In alignment with its commitment to fostering digital skills, Google reiterated the significance of its ‘Grow with Google’ initiative. This program has successfully trained over 420,000 individuals in AI technologies, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital economy. It underscores the importance of building local talent and ensures that citizens can leverage new technologies for business growth and innovation.

Dubai’s Digital Vision

Before concluding the visit, Sheikh Hamdan emphasized Google’s vital role in facilitating the UAE’s technological ambitions. He reaffirmed Dubai’s vision to become a global innovation hub and stressed that such partnerships are critical for realizing the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to generate AED 100 billion in annual value through digital transformation initiatives. This vision showcases a holistic approach to integrating technology into various sectors, ensuring a resilient and diversified economy.

High-Level Delegation

Sheikh Hamdan was accompanied by notable figures during his visit, including Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, and Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director-General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism. Their presence further underscored the significance of government support in fostering partnerships between the public and private sectors to advance the UAE’s digital landscape.

AI at the Core of Dubai’s Future

The visit served as a blueprint for the UAE’s strategic focus on AI as an essential pillar for economic growth. By continuing to forge global partnerships, Dubai is not just adapting to the future of technology but actively co-creating it, thereby solidifying its position as a leader in digital innovation and technological advancement.
