80 Killed as US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship Off Sri Lanka

The conflict between the United States and Iran escalated dramatically on Wednesday when a US submarine sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 individuals. This incident coincided with NATO air defenses intercepting an Iranian ballistic missile aimed at Turkey, marking a significant widening of hostilities.

Rising Tensions in the Region

The escalation follows the emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s deceased supreme leader, as a potential successor, indicating Tehran’s resilience against external pressures. This development comes just five days after a military campaign launched by the United States and Israel, which has reportedly resulted in hundreds of casualties and significant disruptions in global markets.

The missile incident represents the first involvement of Turkey, a NATO member with the second-largest military in the alliance, in the ongoing conflict. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that there was no indication that this would invoke NATO’s collective defense clause.

Impact on Global Shipping and Oil Prices

Hegseth noted that the US submarine strike occurred thousands of kilometers from the Gulf, specifically targeting an Iranian vessel off Sri Lanka’s southern coast. This incident has compounded the ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping has been paralyzed for five consecutive days, severely affecting oil and gas flows from the Middle East.

In response to the rising costs of energy, US President Donald Trump has committed to providing insurance and naval escorts for vessels exporting oil from the region. Despite these assurances, oil prices remained at their highest levels in over a year, with approximately 200 vessels reported to be anchored off the coast, according to estimates from Reuters.

Military Operations Intensify

The United States and Israel have continued their relentless military operations against Iran. Hegseth expressed confidence in the US’s position, stating, “This was never meant to be a fair fight, and it is not a fair fight. We are punching them while they’re down.” He emphasized that the US could sustain its military efforts for as long as necessary.

In contrast, Dan Caine, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, indicated that Iran’s missile capabilities appear to be significantly diminished, as evidenced by a reduction in missile launches. The Israeli military has also reported easing public safety measures across Israel, allowing businesses to operate under certain conditions while keeping schools closed.

Israeli Military Actions and Regional Repercussions

The Israeli military confirmed that its aircraft targeted a compound in eastern Tehran, which housed various Iranian security agencies, including the Republican Guard and intelligence services. Concurrently, Israel has advised residents to evacuate parts of southern Lebanon as it intensifies its operations against Hezbollah, which has recently engaged in cross-border attacks.

The conflict has had a pronounced impact on global markets, leading to a significant downturn in Asia, including a historic crash in Seoul. Investor confidence has been shaken, with many expressing skepticism about Trump’s promises to restore normalcy in the vital shipping corridor.

European markets later stabilized, with US stocks closing higher on hopes for a resolution to the conflict. Some traders noted a shift in sentiment following reports that Iranian intelligence had reached out to the CIA regarding potential avenues for de-escalation. However, a source from the Iranian intelligence ministry dismissed these claims as “absolute lies and psychological warfare.”

Uncertainty Surrounding Leadership in Iran

As explosions continued in Tehran, plans for a funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike, have been thrown into uncertainty. Initially scheduled to lie in state at a major mosque, the Iranian government announced that farewell ceremonies would be postponed indefinitely.

Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei was not present in Tehran at the time of his father’s death. The Assembly of Experts, responsible for selecting the new leader, is expected to announce its decision soon, marking only the second such occurrence since the Islamic Republic’s establishment in 1979.

Candidates for the leadership position have been identified, but specific names have not been disclosed. The Israeli government has stated its intent to pursue whoever is chosen as the new supreme leader.

US Central Command’s Statement on Naval Engagements

US Central Command reported that it has “struck or sunk to the bottom of the ocean” over 20 Iranian ships, including the frigate IRIS Dena, which was identified as the vessel sunk off Sri Lanka. The frigate was reportedly returning to Iran from eastern India. Local authorities confirmed that 32 individuals were rescued, while 87 bodies have been recovered, with around 60 sailors still unaccounted for from a crew of approximately 180.

Hegseth remarked, “An American submarine sunk an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death.”

Despite expressing reservations about the conflict, several European nations have found themselves drawn into military actions in the Middle East to protect their citizens and interests. Britain and France have committed to deploying naval and air forces to counter Iranian retaliation, while Greece has repositioned aircraft and warships to Cyprus.
