Exploring Dubai’s Thriving Design Scene: A Three-Day Adventure
Dubai, a city known for its stunning architecture and vibrant culture, offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition. This article details a captivating three-day journey through Dubai’s dynamic design landscape, highlighting key experiences and attractions that showcase the city’s artistic spirit.
Day One: Immersive Art and Culinary Delights
Vibrant Installations at Alserkal Avenue
Our adventure began at Alserkal Avenue, where creativity comes alive during the Quoz Arts Fest. Here, the Australia-based studio ENESS unveiled their immersive installation, “Forest Dancer and the Path to Pure Creation.” This vibrant display combined light and sound to create an interactive experience, inviting guests to explore a space filled with enchanting visuals and sounds.

Discovering Historical Charms
Later, we ventured to the Al Fahidi Historical District, a striking contrast to the contemporary art scene. Strolling through the narrow, winding paths, we encountered the XVA Gallery, one of Dubai’s oldest contemporary art spaces. Alongside a gallery, it features a charming café and boutique hotel, creating a culturally rich environment. Additionally, we explored the nearby traditional market, brimming with aromatic spices, colorful textiles, and the ever-popular Dubai chocolate.

Culinary Highlights at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
To recharge, we returned to our hotel for a brief respite before indulging in a lavish seven-course tasting menu at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, located within Atlantis The Royal. The Michelin-starred restaurant presented a playful and innovative take on British cuisine, featuring dishes like aerated beetroot and nitro scrambled egg with bacon ice cream. The chic ambiance, complemented by views of The Royal’s illuminated fountains, made for an unforgettable dining experience.
Day Two: An In-Depth Exploration of d3
Design District Insights
On the second day, we headed straight to the Dubai Design District (d3), an energetic hub of art, fashion, and design. As preparations were underway for Design Week, we were granted a sneak peek into various installations. Natasha Carella, the Design Week director, introduced us to local talents like “Some Kind of Practice,” which creatively reimagined the traditional Emirati courtyard, and Bahraini designer Maraj, whose textile-based project addressed ecological themes.
Carella expressed her vision for the event, highlighting the importance of broadening perspectives, especially from emerging markets reshaping global design discourse. She remarked, “Ultimately, the evolution of Dubai Design Week is less about scale and more about depth.”

Dining at The Arts Club Dubai
Our day continued with a lunch at The Arts Club Dubai, an exclusive members-only venue with deep-rooted history dating back to London. This elegant space served exquisite Italian cuisine in its opulent restaurant, Ofelia. Over sumptuous plates of pasta, we reveled in the allure of the creative life in this bustling city.

Engaging at Isola Space
That evening, we attended a press preview at Isola Space, another multifaceted design hub that fosters creative exchange through art exhibitions, event programming, and collaborative workspaces. This lively atmosphere set the stage for discussions filled with inspiration. We wrapped up the night at Jara by Martin Berasategui, enjoyed Basque-inspired dishes, while taking in the stunning skyline views.

Day Three: Celebrating Global Design
Downtown Design Fair
As we ventured back to d3, excitement filled the air with the kickoff of Downtown Design. This major event showcases the region’s top design fair, attracting a variety of global brands under one roof. From Kohler’s desert-inspired installations to Cosentino’s elegant art-deco lounge, each exhibit offered a glimpse into the immense talent and innovation within the region’s design scene.

A Coastal Retreat at Nikki Beach
To conclude our whirlwind cultural exploration, we opted for a luxurious lunch at Nikki Beach’s newly opened Maison Mer. The beachside location, combined with a Riviera-inspired menu featuring seafood delicacies, provided a refreshing escape amid the city’s high-energy atmosphere.
Celebrating Art at Jameel Arts Centre
Our final destination was the Jameel Arts Centre, where we attended the opening reception for The Bouquet and the Wreath, featuring Thai artist Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook. This exhibition marked an exciting chapter for Dubai’s cultural scene, showcasing the region’s commitment to hosting significant global art events.
