UAE Virtual Work Visa: Essential Guide to Application, Eligibility, Requirements, Fees, and Benefits

Dubai has introduced a one-year self-sponsored visa, allowing remote workers employed outside the UAE to reside in the emirate while maintaining their overseas jobs. This initiative is part of the UAE’s efforts to attract digital nomads and enhance its status as a global business hub.

What is the Virtual Work Visa?

The UAE Virtual Work Visa caters to individuals who can perform their jobs remotely, requiring only an internet connection. Launched in 2020 under the UAE Virtual Working Programme, this visa has expanded to cover all emirates. In Dubai, applications are processed by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), while the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) manages applications in other emirates.

How is this visa different from other visas?

The Virtual Work Visa allows remote professionals to live in the UAE while working for an employer or running a business based outside the country. This self-sponsored visa is valid for one year and is non-renewable. However, individuals can apply for a new visa after their current one expires. Musa Dayani, a public relations officer in Dubai, emphasized that this visa is specifically for those living abroad who wish to temporarily work in the UAE. Unlike the Green Visa for freelancers, the Virtual Work Visa does not permit employment with UAE-based companies; work must be conducted for non-UAE entities.

This program is tailored for remote employees, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who want to experience life in Dubai or other emirates without needing to change jobs or establish a local business.

Benefits of the Virtual Work Visa

According to Invest in Dubai, the official digital platform for businesses, the Virtual Work Visa offers several advantages:

  • A one-year work visa allowing residency in the UAE.
  • No requirement for a UAE sponsor.
  • Access to essential utilities and services, including banking, telecommunications, accommodation rental, and obtaining an Emirates ID.
  • Unrestricted travel to and from the UAE, provided the individual does not remain outside the country for more than six consecutive months, as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
  • The ability to sponsor family members, including spouses and children.
  • Access to schooling for dependents.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for the Virtual Work Visa, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria:

  • Individuals of any nationality aged 18 or older can apply.
  • Applicants must be employed by a business outside the UAE, with a minimum one-year contract.
  • Proof of remote work capability is required, typically through an employment contract or employer letter.
  • A minimum monthly salary of $3,500 (approximately Dh12,856) must be demonstrated.

Required documents

The following documents are necessary for the Virtual Work Visa application, as outlined by the GDRFA:

  • A passport with at least six months of validity; a longer validity period is preferred.
  • A recent passport photograph.
  • Proof of remote employment outside the UAE, including a minimum one-year contract.
  • A salary certificate confirming a minimum monthly income of $3,500 (Dh12,856).
  • Results from a medical fitness test.
  • Receipt for the Emirates ID application.
  • Health insurance valid for one year, which can also be travel insurance.

If applicants intend to sponsor family members, additional documentation may be required.

How to apply for a Virtual Work Visa

The application process for the Virtual Work Visa is straightforward. Applications can be submitted through the GDRFA portal or authorized Amer Service Centres in Dubai, or via ICP Smart Services for other emirates.

From the GDRFA portal:

  1. Visit the GDRFA website and navigate to ‘Services’.
  2. Select ‘Residency Services’ and click on ‘Issuance of Virtual Work Residence Permit’.
  3. Complete the application form with personal details, including passport information, nationality, and date of birth.
  4. Attach the required documents.
  5. Pay the applicable fees.
  6. Submit the application; processing typically takes between two to five working days.

From the ICP portal:

  1. Visit the ICP website and select ‘Services’. Navigate to ‘Interactive Services’ and select ‘Issuance of Visa Virtual Work Residence (Virtual Work Employee)’.
  2. Complete the application form with personal details.
  3. Upload the required documents.
  4. Pay the fee.
  5. Upon submission, the ICP will process the application within two days and provide further instructions.

Once in the UAE, applicants can complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID application as part of the standard visa process.

Other considerations

If individuals qualify for a visa-on-arrival in the UAE, they can start their visa application online via the ICP or GDRFA website and complete the formalities upon arrival. Those whose nationalities do not appear on the visa-on-arrival list can still initiate their applications from abroad. Once approved, the ICP or GDRFA will issue an entry permit, which is necessary to complete essential components of the visa application, including the medical fitness test and Emirates ID application.

Entry permit holders have 60 days from their date of entry to fulfill residency requirements.

Cost

The costs associated with the issuance of the Virtual Work Visa are as follows:

  • Residence permit fee: Dh200
  • Knowledge Dirham: Dh10
  • Innovation Dirham: Dh10
  • Fee inside the country: Dh500
  • Delivery fee: Dh20
