UAE Resident of Nearly 50 Years Reflects on Dubai’s Transformative Journey and Resilience

Dubai has been a transformative backdrop for Amira El Sheykh, who arrived in the UAE as an eight-year-old girl nearly five decades ago. Now 57, she considers Dubai her only true home, attributing much of her family’s journey to the city’s rapid development and opportunities.

Amira’s father, an electrical engineer, secured a position in Abu Dhabi during the early stages of the electricity network’s establishment. At that time, Abu Dhabi was characterized by a few roads and low-rise buildings. However, she recalls the swift transformation of the city, noting the emergence of grid roads and high-rises, some of which still stand today along the Corniche.

After completing her education at a government school in Abu Dhabi, Amira pursued her college degree at the American University in Cairo. Although she worked in Egypt for a year, her desire to return to the UAE was strong.

Amira’s connection to the UAE is deeply personal. Born to a Sudanese father and a Russian mother, she holds dual Egyptian and Russian citizenship. In 1995, she accepted a job offer in Dubai, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Since then, she has built a career in real estate, met her husband, and raised her daughter, who now works as cabin crew for Emirates.

Her late husband, Peter Beckley, considered relocating the family abroad. However, after four years in Australia and South Africa, homesickness led them back to Dubai in 2006, coinciding with the onset of a significant real estate boom. Amira’s proficiency in Russian allowed her to join a real estate firm, where she initially focused on recruiting Russian-speaking salespeople. She eventually rose to the position of Senior Director before leaving the company last year.

Amira emphasizes the positive atmosphere in Dubai, stating that even during her travels, people often inquire about her optimistic outlook. She attributes this positivity to her life in Dubai, where resilience is a shared trait among its residents.

The Resilience of Dubai

Amira has witnessed Dubai’s ability to rebound from global challenges, noting that the city consistently emerges stronger and more recognized on the world stage. She believes that this resilience instills a similar strength in its residents, encouraging them to confront challenges with a proactive mindset.

Following her husband’s passing, Amira found solace in Dubai’s safety, which she considers crucial for raising her daughter. The city’s secure environment allows them the freedom to navigate their lives without fear, a significant factor for women in particular.

Her daughter, Alexandra, embodies the spirit of a “Dubai kid,” having always aspired to join Emirates as cabin crew. Although Amira initially planned for Alexandra to pursue higher education in Australia, her daughter chose to stay in Dubai after graduation, affirming her commitment to the city.

Leadership and Vision

Amira attributes Dubai’s magnetic pull to the consistent delivery of promises by its leaders. She recalls His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s declaration, “build and they will come,” which she witnessed firsthand as the real estate sector flourished.

The recent launch of the “Dubai-it” initiative resonated with Amira, as it encapsulates the city’s proactive work philosophy. She sees this approach reflected in the ambitious development of Dubai World Central, the city’s newest airport, which aims to enhance connectivity and efficiency in global transit.

Amira highlights the strategic advantages of Dubai World Central, including its proximity to Jebel Ali port and connections to major transport networks. She believes that such developments will further solidify Dubai’s status as a global hub for trade and travel.

A Lasting Commitment to Dubai

Despite nearly 50 years of witnessing the UAE’s evolution, Amira believes the story of Dubai is far from complete. She sees immense potential for future growth and is committed to remaining in a city that has profoundly shaped her life.

Currently residing in The Springs with her daughter, Amira expresses a deep-rooted connection to Dubai. She affirms, “We have planted our roots very deeply. We’re not going anywhere.”
