UAE Faces Early Summer Heat: NCM Expert Explains Rising Temperatures

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates is experiencing a significant rise in temperatures as summer approaches, with forecasts indicating hotter days and increased humidity in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other Emirates. This trend has been evident in recent weeks, leading to questions about the timing of summer’s official start.

Dr. Mohamed Alebri, director of the meteorology department at the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in Dubai, clarified that while the summer solstice on June 21 marks the astronomical beginning of summer, the UAE typically experiences summer-like conditions much earlier. He noted that meteorological summer is generally recognized as starting on June 1.

According to Dr. Alebri, the UAE’s climate often sees the establishment of its hot summer pattern before the solstice. This includes rising daytime temperatures, increased heat stress, drier inland conditions, and heightened humidity during nights and early mornings along coastal areas. Consequently, residents have felt the heat well before the official start of summer.

Dr. Alebri explained that the hottest period in the UAE usually occurs in July and August, attributed to the seasonal lag between maximum solar radiation and peak surface heating.

Current Weather Conditions

Today’s weather is characterized by fair conditions, with clouds expected to form in the eastern regions. Peak temperatures are forecasted to reach 38°C in Dubai and Ajman, while Sharjah is expected to hit 40°C and Abu Dhabi 41°C.

Humidity levels are anticipated to rise tonight and into Tuesday morning, particularly in coastal and internal areas, with potential for mist or fog formation. Light to moderate winds, reaching speeds of 30 km/h in coastal regions, will contribute to gentle sea conditions, with wave heights remaining between two and three feet.

Here is a detailed breakdown of today’s minimum and maximum temperatures across the Emirates:

Maximum Temp (°C) | Minimum Temp (°C)
Dubai: 38°C | 29°C
Abu Dhabi: 41°C | 29°C
Al Ain: 45°C | 33°C
Sharjah: 40°C | 30°C
Ajman: 38°C | 30°C
Fujairah: 39°C | 31°C
Ras Al Khaimah: 42°C | 30°C
Umm Al Quwain: 39°C | 31°C
Liwa: 45°C | 26°C

Weekly Weather Outlook

Looking ahead, Dr. Alebri forecasts a continuation of very hot and generally stable weather, with occasional haze and dust, as well as increased humidity during the night and early morning hours.

He provided a detailed outlook for the week, indicating that the weather across the UAE is expected to remain typical of the summer season. Daytime conditions are likely to be fair to sunny, particularly in internal and desert areas, where temperatures will be highest. Hazy conditions may occur intermittently, especially with light to moderate winds that could stir up dust in exposed areas.

Dr. Alebri emphasized that while internal areas are likely to record the highest temperatures, coastal regions may experience slightly lower maximums but with higher humidity levels, particularly at night and in the morning. Despite the presence of clouds, the likelihood of rainfall remains low, with only occasional low clouds or convective development expected over eastern or mountainous areas.

Precautions Against Summer Heat

As temperatures continue to rise in the coming weeks, Dr. Alebri advised residents to take necessary precautions, especially during the hottest parts of the day. He recommended limiting outdoor activities during midday and early afternoon, and taking regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

It is crucial to stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water throughout the day, wearing light and breathable clothing, and using sun protection. Additionally, Dr. Alebri cautioned against leaving children, elderly individuals, pets, or heat-sensitive materials inside parked vehicles. Drivers should also exercise caution during hazy or dusty conditions, as visibility may suddenly decrease in exposed areas.
